Layers
fascinate me: new paint over old walls, once shiny artifacts showing
the patina of time. What is on the surface, and what is hidden? With
various media I build layers of texture and color. I attempt to convey
a sense of history; creating subtle surprises and places to travel
within each piece. Intuition and experience guide my work.
What is a Clayprint?
Invented by Mitch Lyons www.mitchlyons.com, clayprinting is a
new monotype technique, with clay for "ink", and hand tools instead of
a press.
A slab of stoneware clay is rolled flat and allowed to become
leather-hard. China clay, mixed with pure pigments and water, is
applied to the slab in many layers, creating the image. Using a
rolling pin, and other hand tools, the image is transferred from the
slab to specialized canvas. The top layer of clay is removed
with each 'pull', so every print is unique. China clay is inert,
and the pigments are permanent, thus the print should maintain its
beauty and integrity for years to come.
